Joseph Emanuel Triay, QC. - (JE)


J.E.Triay, QC, is the son of one of the firm's founders, the late S.P.Triay, KC, and became the senior partner in 1972. Appointed Queen's Counsel in 1982, he is particularly well reputed in the area of Litigation.
Described by Chambers & Partners as a " legend on the local scene" and a "deeply impressive man", and by PLC Which Lawyer? as a "leading and highly regarded lawyer". He is undertaking less court work now and is moving away from contentious matters, however, he is nevertheless still very highly regarded.

Joseph E. Triay Jnr - (Melo)


Melo has considerable experience in many fields of law. Particularly active in the Admiralty & Shipping field in which Triay & Triay has the undeniable reputation as the "premier in maritime issues" (Legal 500) he was instrumental in the development of the 'expedited sale' procedure which accounts for Gibraltar's popularity as a jurisdiction of choice amongst banks and leading shipping firms in London. He has acted as lead lawyer in a number of high profile cases such as the arrest of seven Renaissance passenger Cruise Liners following the 9/11 outrages and the arrest of seven ADCL container ships of Abu Dhabi.
Melo also has extensive experience in litigation and asset tracing and is described by Chambers Europe as "exceptional" and a "mature, calm lawyer with a lot of experience." He forms part of the Firm's "tremendous talent pool of quality litigators" (Legal 500). He has acted for banks in the recovery of £60m of illegally extracted funds, the Securities and Exchange Commission and the trustees in a complex bankruptcy involving complicated offshore structures, OAO Gazprom in a dispute with Media Most Limited, various commercial disputes in the areas of property development, oil field drilling rights (Total in Russia) and land disputes in Spain. Javier Triay


Javier is a senior partner of the firm and he sits on the firm's Executive Committee. He has considerable experience advising on both corporate and commercial matters and has extensive experience advising on takeovers, company acquisitions, and corporate finance matters as well as in private client and trust sector work. Presently, Javier heads up the legal team at T&T which advises the Government of Gibraltar on the Eastside Project - Gibraltar's largest ever property development transaction; prior to this he also acted for the Danish owners of Europort and Eurotowers, which at the time was the largest property investment made by a Danish company outside of Denmark. Javier has also advised on the implementation of rescue schemes for certain banks and other international organisations as a result of the current world economic crisis.

Javier maintains a premiere ranking by Chambers Global in General Business Law, and is described as the sort of lawyer to instruct if you want "someone to fight your corner, no holds barred". He also receives high praise from the Legal 500 with a first tier ranking in relation to private client work. Further he is described as a "true expert" for his work within the Banking and Finance sectors.

Simon P Triay - (Chico)


Chico has a varied legal practice with a good deal of his work being in the field of personal injuries litigation primarily acting on behalf of the major insurance and construction companies, although also undertaking some claimant work. His experience ranges from handling claims involving very serious head injuries to a straightforward whiplash injury both in the context of road traffic injuries and employment situations. In this regard Chico has had ocassion to appear in the Privy Council in the UK in a landmark decision relating to the liability of the Government of Gibraltar qua highway authority. His practice has been extended into the area of clinical negligence in which he has acted on behalf of claimants and also defended the professional care provider.
In addition, a substantial part of Chico's practice is in Shipping where he has acted for a number of shipowners in registering their vessels in the Gibraltar Ship Registry, and for financing banks in relation to their security.
Chico additionally manages the firm's Trade Mark and Intellectual Property Practice as well as undertaking some private client work in drafting wills and assisting clients in the administration of estates.

Raymond A Triay - (Monchi)


Monchi is both a practising Spanish Abogado and an English qualified Barrister-at-Law. For the 20 years he has practised with the family firm he has specialised in the Shipping & Admiralty division and has acted on some of the largest admiralty cases in Gibraltar, including the arrest of the Abu Dhabi Container Lines Fleet of seven ships and the arrest of vessels belonging to Renaissance Cruise Lines.
In 2004 Monchi established Triay & Triay Spain. His extensive litigation experience with a speciality in commercial litigation and a strong reputation for general commercial and corporate work, both contentious and non-contentious, has helped to establish Triay & Triay Spain as a reputable Spanish litigation practice.
In Gibraltar Monchi has also developed a strong banking practice and has acted as advisor to many of the major banks in Gibraltar, including SG Hambros Limited, Barclays Bank Plc, Hispano Commerzbank Limited and Jyske Bank. Together with his father J. E. Triay, Q.C. he set up the Royal Bank of Scotland (Gibraltar) Limited and Varde Bank (Gibraltar) Limited.

Julian R Triay - (Pelu)


Pelu initially undertook his Solicitor's training contract in the UK, working at Glaisyers in Manchester, and also with Finers of London, before returning to Gibraltar and joining the family firm. His main area of practice is in property law in all its aspects, but with particular emphasis on commercial transactions and financing. He is described by the Legal 500 as a 'leading market figure with a wealth of experience', and is also 'recommended' by PLC Which Lawyer?
He also has experience in intellectual property rights litigation, including actions for trademark infringement and common law passing off.
In keeping with Triay & Triay's strengths in the Shipping & Admiralty fields, Julian has advised P&I Clubs and insurance companies in respect of salvage claims, collisions, and limitation as well as more day to day matters for clients with a maritime connection.

He has co-authored the Gibraltar chapter of Butterworth's International Guide to Money Laundering and Practice with Robert Vasquez (also a partner with the firm).

James Ramagge


James is a partner in the firm's Shipping & Admiralty department, and as such forms part of the team described by the Legal 500 as the 'premier in maritime issues'. He has considerable experience in the registration and financing of vessels on the Gibraltar Commercial Ships Register acting for both ship owners and many international shipping banks. He also acts for individual private clients who wish to register vessels on the Gibraltar Pleasure Yacht Registry, and in this regard has acted in the negotiation of yacht building contracts as well as for international banks and leasing companies financing pleasure yachts in Gibraltar.
James also forms part of the firm's Admiralty practice and has extensive experience in ship arrests ranging from individual ships to multiple vessel arrests. He has participated in the two largest multiple vessel arrests in Gibraltar's history.

He is a Member of the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple.

Charles is a partner in our litigation department. Charles is a trained mediator and undertakes mediation as part of his practice.

Alejandro is the Partner and Managing Director of Triay & Triay Spain's office in Marbella.
A specialist in realty and development he has considerable experience and contacts within Spain, notably in Madrid where he has worked for a number of years for Property Development firm's. Major achievements in his career to date have been front-running the location, development and organisation of the new Spanish American Express Head Office, the provision of expert legal advice for a number of international mortgage banks (Reinhyp, RBS, Algemaine Bank, Eurohypo, Commerzbank, and ING) and also the provision of Due Diligence responsible for Lar Grosvenor, Madrid.

John Hodgson - Triay & Triay Spain S.L., Sotogrande


John a qualified Solicitor, practised in Hong Kong from 1988-'98 where he gained extensive experience in international commercial transactions and cross-border trading.
In 1998 set up his own firm, Hodgson Bilton, in Gibraltar.
In 2004, together with Raymond (Monchi) Triay, he set up HBT Legal Services S.L. in Sotogrande this has since 2008, been merged with Triay & Triay to form one of the latters two Spanish offices.
Triay & Triay Sotogrande provides a fully bilingual team possessing of all the necessary experience to cater for both resident and non-residents in Spain.
John is also an English Notary Public and Professor of Law teaching Trusts Law and Administration on the LLM (Masters of Laws) course at the St Thomas University in Miami, Florida.

He is a member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners, the International Bar Association, the International Tax Planning Association, the Law Society of England & Wales, the English and the Hong Kong Societies of Notaries and the Gibraltar Bar Association.

Ray Pilley


Ray Pilley, a former RAF fast jet pilot and instructor was admitted to the role of solicitors in England & Wales in 1981 and called to the Bar in Gibraltar in 1988. After running his own highly successful practice for almost 15 years he joined Triay & Triay in 2006. Ray could best be described as an approachable all rounder but spends the majority of his time dealing with criminal cases at all levels, conveyancing and matrimonial.
He is currently Vice-Chairman of the Bar of Gibraltar, sits as legal advisor to the Medical Registration Board. He is also the principal advisor to three Building Society's in Gibraltar and is a member of the criminal reform committee. For the past ten years he has carried out almost every special examination in Gibraltar, and he sits on the Admissions & Disciplinary Committee from time to time, and as occasional chairman to the Industrial Tribunal.

Amber Turner


Amber is an associate in our Litigation department. She has considerable experience of family matters to include divorce, separation, access, and maintenance applications, domestic violence cases, applications for injunctions and ouster Orders.
Additionally, she deals with employment cases including unfair dismissal, sex / other discrimination cases, redundancy, personal injury and clinical negligence matters.
Amber was acting solicitor for the Claimant in the case of Zayas v Gibraltar Health Authority (2003) with the record breaking award of £2.5m in damages. She was also the leading barrister acting for the Claimant in the Industrial Tribunal case of Lopez v Overseas Motors (2004) achieving an award for sex discrimination on grounds of pregnancy, which was reported widely in the local media.
In 2003 and 2007 respectively, she was junior counsel to the partner who had the conduct in the defence of the accused in the only two murder trials in Gibraltar in the past decade.
Amber is currently on the Ministry for Justice's Committee for reform of the Gibraltar laws in the areas of family and children.

She is a member of the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple and the General Council of the Bar of Gibraltar.

Alan Buchanan


Alan obtained his professional qualifications through the Institute of Professional Legal Studies in Belfast, where he graduated with distinction and, following completion fo a two year apprenticeship, was admitted to practice in 2003.

Over the subsequent 5 years of practice at a top tier firm in Northern Ireland he has gained a wealth of experience and expertise in all manner of corporate and commercial matters including company, partnership and LLP "start ups", mergers and acquisitions, takeovers, management buy outs, buy ins, shareholders disputes, joint ventures, franchising and commercial agency.

He moved to Gibraltar and joined Triay & Triay in September 2008 and works within the Corporate & Commercial department, specialising in company law and corporate transactions. His breadth of experience does allow him to advise clients on a full range of corporate and commercial matters.

Charles Melvin


Charles joined the firm as a trainee solicitor in 2006 specialising under the tutelage of Robert Vasquez in the Financial Services and Corporate Departments into which he qualified.
Debt capital markets, including all forms of debt offering constitute a major part of his practice to date. He has worked on Gibraltar's largest commercial bond issue as well as numerous $B plus syndications.
Investment funds including EIF's and UCIT III's, from their structuring to their regulation, represent a significant area in his specialisation and he is a leading figure in the firm's significant growth in this area. Further, Charles is involved in all forms of financial regulation, in particular in the Banking sector having advised HM Treasury on its recent acquisitions in this sector.
On the Corporate side, Charles has a strong grounding in all aspects of corporate matters. In particular he is experienced in all forms of M&A work including both private and public acquisitions and joint venture projects. Recent highlights have included the merger between Perekrestok and Pyaterochka, the RBS (and its consortium) takeover of ABN AMRO and the subsequent takeover of ABN AMRO's Gibraltar branch by SG Hambros.
Prior to working in law Charles worked for Marsh advising directors of multinationals as to their exposure to liabilities arising out of Directors and Officers law suits.

Jeremy Acton


Jeremy is an associate with the Commercial & Corporate Team. He has experience advising in relation to share purchase agreements, shareholder's agreements, joint ventures, option agreements, bonds, letters-of-credit, commercial leases, and general corporate documentation. Recently, he has assisted in the purchase of ABN Amro Bank ( Gibraltar) by SG Hambros (Gibraltar). He is also part of the legal team working on the Eastside Project for the Government of Gibraltar, which is the largest development in Gibraltar's history.

Additionally, Jeremy undertakes and assists with civil litigation. He has particular experience in intelectual property and breach of contract and recently assisted in the case of Trafalgar Financial Futures Ltd v Ahmed Hamdi & others.

Prior to moving to law Jeremy worked in London in structured finance and investment banking, which provides the firm additional expertise in these areas.

He is a member of Lincoln's Inn, is a co-opted member of the General Council of the Bar of Gibraltar, and is also a member of the International Bar Association (IBA).

Ivan Robba


Ivan works very closely with James Ramagge, a partner of the firm. His main area of practice includes Shipping & Admiralty, where he is gaining first hand experience in dealing with the registration and financing of vessels on the Gibraltar Commercial Ships Register acting for both ship owners and international shipping banks. He also works with individual private clients who wish to register their private yachts on the Gibraltar Pleasure Yacht Registry, and has assisted in matters relating to international banks and leasing companies financing pleasure yachts in Gibraltar. Further, he has dealt with the preparation of employee contracts for the crew members of a number of large Private Yachts.
Additionally, Ivan is gaining valuable experience within the Company & Commercial, Private Client, Personal Injury, Criminal Litigation, and small claims (debt collection) sectors. Having studied Internet & E-Commerce Law, which is an area of Gibraltar's economy that is growing, he is keen to develop his experience in this field.

Patrick H Canessa ED


Patrick is a latecomer to law having distinguished himself over many years in The Royal Gibraltar Regiment (where he attained the rank of Major) and also as a stalwart of the business community. He brings with him considerable commercial experience.
Patrick is at the forefront of the firm's growing and varied criminal practice and has represented some of the largest construction companies on Health and Safety matters.
His commerical experience and fondness for Morocco have propelled him to the front of the firm's rapidly developing business in that country.

He is a member of the Honourable Society of the Inner Temple, the General Council of the Bar of Gibraltar, the Royal Gibraltar Yacht Club, the Honourable Artillery Company, and he sits on the board of the Gibraltar Port Authority.
Additionally, Patrick is the Honorary Consul for Italy in Gibraltar.

Carl Ramagge


Carl joined the firm as an associate at the start of 2008. Following an intitial period within the firm's Property department he has now joined the Litigation team, which is his preferred area of practice.
His main interest lies in Civil and Commercial Litigation although he is also developing an interest in Criminal Law, having recently assisted in several high profile cases in the Supreme Court locally.
In addition, he has gained valuable experience in both Judicial Review and Admiralty proceedings.

He is a member of the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple, the Government of Gibraltar's Sports Advisory Council and is also a member of the Gibraltar Hockey Association Council.

Sarah Miles


Sarah joined the firm in September 2008 and is currently undertaking her training contract under the direction of the firm's training principal Charles Simpson.
Having spent her first eight months within the Litigation team, where she gained experience in the different aspects of civil litigation by assisting Charles Simpson, and on occasion Freddie Vasquez, QC, she has recently moved to the Corporate & Commercial department under the supervision of Robert Vasquez. It is anticipated that her final seat will be in the Property & Private Client department, before becoming a fully qualified solicitor in September 2010.

Derek Galliano


Derek joined the firm in 1984 as the Accountant and his role has since evolved to his current role of Finance Director. Prior to his joining Triay & Triay he was the General Manager of a locally based company administering various Reinsurance Underwriting Pools.
Derek sits together with Mark Truman-Davies, the Business Development Manager, as part of the Management Team. His responsibilities are multi-faceted and cover all aspects of Finance, ranging from the day to day running of the Accounts Team, audit matters, to the preparation and monitoring of the Firm's Budget. Further, his role covers not only Triay & Triay in Gibraltar but also Totus (the associated firm which provides company, trust and wealth management advice and support), and both of our Spanish offices. He also maintains close working relationships with local and international banks and institutions with which we have a working relationship.

Derek is a Member of the Association of Accounting Technicians and also holds the Certificate of Financial Advisors.

Mark Truman-Davies


Mark joined the firm in 2006 as the Business Development Manager, following a career in HM Forces (Army) with The Queen's Regiment and laterly The Royal Gibraltar Regiment, seeing service in the UK, N Ireland, Germany, Denmark, the USA and Cyprus. Leaving the forces with the rank of Captain, he decided to return to Gibraltar and embarked on a 16 year career in Private Banking. Following a series of Relationship Management roles with Credit Suisse, Lombard Odier and NatWest, where he headed up the Premium Banking department looking after high net worth clients he decided to return to his Man-management 'roots'.
Mark's role within Triay & Triay is varied and multi-hatted. Essentially, he sits together with Derek Galliano, the Finance Director as part of the Management Team. His responsibilities include Administration, HR, Man-management, Recruitment & Training, Marketing & Advertising, Networking & Relationship building, Partners, and Special Projects, in fact anything with the exception of Finance and Law.

As an FSC Approved EIF Director he has been instrumental in the growth of the firms Funds proposition.

He is a Member of the Chartered Management Institute, and the Army & Navy Club.
